Book Babies Storytime Update

Hello, readers, and welcome to 2025! Do you ever have those weeks where it feels like everything is happening at once? It’s been like that for me lately. I have a couple of storytimes in the backlog to share with you soon, but today I figured I’d give a quick update on my Book Babies programs and the new songs and rhymes I’ve been using for the last few months.

You can see all my previous posts about Book Babies, which would include lots of rhymes and songs to do. I’ve gotten to the point that I’m recycling old plans, but I do still switch out activities here and there to keep it fresh for me, and to replace songs or rhymes that didn’t quite jive (or I’m just not in the mood for!) It’s fun to see what works with a particular group.

The books featured in the photos below are just some of the board books made available for individual reading.

The general plan goes like this:

  • Hello/Welcome song
    • I use a puppet as well as singing each child’s name in the song
  • Animal Hello
    • Use several animal puppets, with animal noises incorporated in the song
  • Body Song
  • Fingerplay
    • If too complex for babies (i.e., anything more involved than Pat-A-Cake), encourage grownups to do the motions as a kind of “puppet show” for babies.
  • Bounce
  • Lift
    • Occasionally there’s a song that incorporates bounces and lifts, of course. Any combination will do, or one longer song with multiple verses may be substituted for both
  • Lullaby
    • I always play this on ukulele
  • Reading time
    • Currently doing individual reading for 2-3 minutes, but have read board books to the group before
  • Tickle/On Your Back
    • Often good for post-diaper change, usually uses leg motions
  • Props or Dancing
    • Include 3-4 songs and rhymes that go with the month’s prop
  • Lifting Song – Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
    • Consistent at each program
  • Goodbye Rhyme

Here is an updated room setup, with the parachute out for babies to lay on/sit on. I started to put out round floor mats at each wedge/seat, with the caveat that anyone can pull up a chair to sit at if they don’t want to get down on the floor. My pink short chair is perfect for this – I can move easily from it to the floor if I want to demo one way or another. There’s a random board book at each place for them to use during our individual reading time.

I am happy to report that after a couple of years of having a “color the parachute” station during our outdoor summer storytime, it’s much more colorful and fun!

Fingerplay Rhyme/Tickle: This Little Train

I have used this one for Hispanic Heritage Month themed toddler storytimes before, but this is the first time I’ve used this song for babies. I do have several Spanish-speaking families, so I was glad to include it!

Lullaby

So many variations of this song, but Raffi’s is a sweet one. I remind caregivers that you can sing any name instead of “Irene,” and in fact I did try to go around the room and sing each child’s name in the chorus. Irene is repeated four times each chorus, so you can potentially get 12 names in as written, and of course you can repeat the chorus as many times as you need.

Tickle/On Your Back

I converted this from one to do with arms to a leg rhyme and it works pretty well. I emphasized that they didn’t need any precision doing the different motions, but in, out, in, out, cha-cha works!

Another one I’ve converted to doing with legs! We also talked about whether to push and pull from baby’s perspective or caregiver’s – it could go either way!

Book Babies Storytime (October and beyond)

I started doing a separate infant program (0-12 months or pre-walking) in January 2023. By October, I noticed that the individual families in my group were completely different from the ones that started in January – those had moved on to my toddler sessions. So, I started recycling my previous plans, though I did switch a couple of things out, wanting to try new activities occasionally.

So for this post, I’ll show my general outline, and list just the new rhymes/songs since October. Going forward, I won’t list individual program plans, but maybe an update post with new stuff every few months. You can always go back and see the previous full plans here.

Lullabies

This was a very special one for me. I remember my dad singing this to me. I modified the second verse to secularize it, but also learned that there are quite a few more verses than I knew about. It was originally written in the 1920s and as all folk songs, there are lots of lyric variations.

Book Babies Storytime (September)

Here’s another Book Babies plan! This was the plan for September, 2023. Instead of doing a prop this month, we got up and did some dancing with our little ones! At first, it felt a little awkward – I think grownups felt a little self-conscious. But I used my baby stand-in, Froggie, and demonstrated, and they eventually loosened up. I used my ukulele to do both our lullaby and the Baby Bear Waltz, then finished with some bubbles – another activity this group had not yet done. Two elements reminded me of pirates (Two Little Boats and What Shall We Do with a Grumpy Baby) so I ended up theming the handout as piratey – appropriate since Talk Like a Pirate Day is in September!

I think I will keep putting dancing in the rotation, but perhaps less often that the usual suspects of scarves, shakers, and parachute. I usually switch to a different prop each month, and change out songs and rhymes a few at a time, so there are always a few familiars in the lineup.

Early Literacy Tip: Associate songs with fun, and they can help ease a grumpy mood. Try “What Shall We Do with a Grumpy Baby?” when your child is having fun, and it might help them shake an actual grumpy mood later on.

I finally changed up this hello animal puppet song! I do still start with the dog Scout, then bring out two other random animals.

The familiar tune makes this a good one for parents to jump in. I did have to insert in the “whole baby” verse (to ease my own mind) to wave them (GENTLY) around. All the grownups smiled.

For babies, we do fingerplays as “puppet shows” for the child, rather than expecting them to be able to do these fine motor movements. Since it is difficult to hold a baby when you are hiding your hands behind your back, for thumbkin we start with fists out.

This isn’t a terribly difficult song, but there are a lot more chords (eight) with the bridge part than the typical children’s song. If it’s helpful, it’s totally okay for you to have the songsheet out during your program – that’s what I do! It’s okay to not have songs memorized (and I think that goes for all songs/rhymes. I put words up for caregivers, but I use them, too, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.)

Book Babies Storytime (August)

Here’s another Book Babies plan! This was the plan for August, 2023. This month’s prop was egg shakers, and we did a lullaby to the tune of “Love Me Tender” on ukulele. I do the same themeless plan three weeks each month at a time, to get the caregivers familiar and comfortable with the songs and rhymes. I usually switch to a different prop each month, and change out songs and rhymes a few at a time, so there are always a few familiars in the lineup.

Early Literacy Tip: Making up new lyrics to songs you already know (as in our lullaby, You’re My Rainbow) is a great way to be creative and introduce your child to popular music.

Here is our room setup, with the parachute out for babies to lay on/sit on, with a few chairs for those who prefer them to the floor. My pink short chair is perfect for this – I can move easily from it to the floor if I want to demo one way or another. I wish our parachute was colorful – I think the original idea was that you can write on it. There are some names on there from years ago that are probably grown with their own children by now.

This tune follows a major scale from one octave to the next and back again. I think it’s great for babies to hear it since it’s the basis of most Western music and having those tones in your head will help with musicality.

A classic. I encourage parents to do the motions in front of their baby like a “puppet show.” Since it’s hard to put your arms behind your back when holding a baby, when the birds fly away, I just wiggle and then tuck my fingers away.

Early Literacy Tip: Tummy time is important for newborns and infants 1–3 months old who are just developing neck control. Tummy time helps develop the muscles they’ll need to roll over, sit up, crawl, and walk. Always stay with your baby during tummy time. Start with a few minutes at a time, 2-3 times a day, and work up. It’s also good for older babies, 4–7 months old. They should still spend some supervised time on their bellies, even if they can roll over and sit with some help. Tummy time helps them practice lifting their head and chest further by straightening their arms. This strengthens arm, chest, and back muscles.

Before doing this rhyme, I shared our early development tip. This is a great rhyme to make rolling over fun. I also had to share what I learned about “stiles” when I was researching what that word was, and how they worked. (A stile is something that allows humans (and sometimes their dogs) to easily go over a fence in a field, while not letting the livestock through.)

I’m slowly adding my backlog of Book Babies plans, so here’s what we did in the month of May, 2023. I do the same themeless plan a month at a time, to get the caregivers familiar and comfortable with the songs and rhymes. I usually switch to a different prop each month, and change out songs and rhymes a few at a time, so there are always a few familiars in the lineup.

Early Literacy Tip: The use of small percussion instruments such as bells, rhythm sticks, shakers, and drums helps children with muscular development and coordination.

Here is our room setup, with the parachute out for babies to lay on/sit on, with a few chairs for those who prefer them to the floor. My pink short chair is perfect for this – I can move easily from it to the floor if I want to demo one way or another. Each month is a new prop. This month we got out the jingle bells! This was a lot of fun and the babies really liked the jingle noise. I did try to emphasize that there was a possibility that a bell piece could come loose and be a choking hazard, to try to keep grownups on the lookout. I did see bells go in mouths, so I am not sure if I would do bells for this group again. I wonder if there are infant-safe bells out there.

Early Literacy Tip: Demonstrating the meaning of words with the way we say them reinforces that concept for babies. When we say “slowly” slowly and “quickly” quickly, our babies learn faster. In addition, slowing down our words – “slow-ly, slow-ly, slow-ly” makes it clear that each syllable is a separate sound.

Instead of opening and shutting our fingers, we opened and shut our whole hands in a clapping motion. We talked here a bit about how babies aren’t quite ready for that fine motor manipulation, but as they become older toddlers and preschoolers it will help them with their grip strength.

The first week we tried to put the babies in the middle of the parachute and the adults held and walked the parachute in a circle around them – the idea being that the babies would slowly rotate in the middle. (Like in this video) Instead, the babies fell over on each other. (Oops!) After that, we held our babies and walked around in a circle holding the parachute.

Early Literacy Tip: With egg shaker songs for babies, we don’t want to overwhelm them or scare them with sound. We don’t expect them to do specific movements, but there are two main ways we can use egg shakers with them: We shake the egg shakers to the steady beat along with the songs we sing, or we can give them to the babies to shake while we sing or listen. The goal here is merely to expose them to the sound of songs. If we’re the ones shaking the beat, they’ll start to build an unconscious awareness of the beat.

Here is our room setup, with the parachute out for babies to lay on/sit on, with a few chairs for those who prefer them to the floor. My pink short chair is perfect for this – I can move easily from it to the floor if I want to demo one way or another. I wish our parachute was colorful – I think the original idea was that you can write on it. There are some names on there from years ago that are probably grown with their own children by now.

Instead of opening and shutting our fingers, we opened and shut our whole hands in a clapping motion. We talked here a bit about how babies aren’t quite ready for that fine motor manipulation, but as they become older toddlers and preschoolers it will help them with their grip strength.

After a fun bounce, we slow it down a bit with a lullaby. I remind grownups that rocking and holding your baby while singing is a great way to calm them, even if it’s not bedtime. I would do Spanish to start, but then ask if anyone knew how to say “I love you” in any other languages. If not, I had a cheat sheet on my ukulele songsheet!

I place a book on each wedge on the parachute , so I encourage grownups to take a few minutes to grab a book that is nearby and looks interesting, and to interact with the book however they’d like with their baby. They can read the text, but they don’t have to – they can describe the pictures, colors, or even just let their baby practice turning pages. We generally do this for 2-3 minutes, or until the group as a whole seems to be nearing a stopping point.

After reading, we do a rhyme that’s good for “on your back.” I saw this modification for the traditional nursery rhyme from Intellidance, which uses leg movements for each line.

Book Babies Storytime (February)

I wrote up my plan for my very first Book Babies sessions in January of this year, but I’m realizing I haven’t updated it at all. I do the same themeless plan a month at a time, to get the caregivers familiar and comfortable with the songs and rhymes. I usually switch to a different prop each month, and change out songs and rhymes a few at a time, so there are always a few familiars in the lineup.

This has really turned out to be a great program, and I consistently get eight to twelve babies, which seems just right. We have a lot of fun bouncing, singing, tickling, and giggling. After the first month, I instituted a few minutes of individual reading instead of reading aloud to the group. The books I’ll feature in the photos below are just some of my favorite board books I’ve passed around.

Early Literacy Tip: Singing to your child is important, and it doesn’t matter if you sing in English or another language. In one scientific study, babies as young as one week could distinguish their mother’s voice from a group of other female voices. Singing helps trigger speech development, and children love hearing their grownups’ voices, so sing aloud to your children at home in any language you like.

One last rhyme with Scout the puppet, adapted from one about “Teddy.” I have looked for the source that I got this one and unfortunately I did not record it. I tried googling but nothing came up. If anyone knows the source, I’m happy to give credit!

I feel that a body part song is an important part of baby programming. This one can be repeated with any body parts, and I started jotting down some different options to do each time. I’m currently doing three verses, always starting with “nose.”
